October 2023
Earlier this month, a German TV team came out to Great Bernera to film our life on the island.
They were curious to find out why we chose to move from a large town in Bavaria to a small island in the Outer Hebrides. They were also interested in what steps we’re taking to become self-sufficient in our food and energy production.
Alina and Thomas, the reporter and the cameraman, spent a fun day and a half with us and left with almost five hours of video footage. This they edited down to a 12-minute report which was aired on German TV channel RTL on Saturday, 21 October.
This is the report โ there are a few minor inaccuracies but, on the whole, theyโve done a stellar job. Thank you, Alina and Thomas!
(For the benefit of our non-German speaking friends, Helen has added English subtitles.)
We hope you enjoy it ๐

Oh Helen and Rudi, I can’t hear your story too many times! Such an inspiration. This film is a lovely inside “Blick” into what you’ve achieved together. (And it’s a great to hear Rudi’s Bavarian accent – I’ve only ever heard him speak English!!)
Thanks Michelle! I never realised you hadn’t heard Rudi speaking German before ๐
What a super video and amazing life you’ve built there! Very impressive, Helen and Rudi.
Thanks Eric. So lovely to hear from you! We hope you’re well ๐
Great to see you both. Lovely video and the place looks fabulous! ๐
Thanks Ian. You’ll have to come over and see it for yourself one day ๐
